Variegated Sweet Flag – Acorus Calamus ‘Variegatus’

SKU: 6180756 Category:

Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in part shade. Plants perform well in both boggy conditions (including shallow standing water to 3-4” deep) and consistently moist garden soils. Never allow soils to dry out. Scorched leaf tips and withering leaves are often the first signs of drying soils. In water gardens, plants are typically planted in containers with water covering the crowns or in wet soils at the water’s edge. Plants appreciate some relief from hot summer sun (e.g., afternoon shade or filtered sun) when grown in hot summer climates. Plants will slowly naturalize by spreading rhizomes but are not considered to be invasive. If grown in containers sunk below the water surface, plants will not spread.

Typical Uses:

  • Water Gardens: Variegated Sweet Flag thrives in water gardens and pond edges, where it can be used as an attractive accent plant or groundcover. Its variegated leaves create a delightful contrast against the still waters, making it an eye-catching addition.
  • Landscaping: Incorporate Acorus Calamus ‘Variegatus’ into your landscape to brighten up shady areas, and borders, or as a container plant. Its unique coloration provides an elegant touch to any garden design.

Establishment and Care Instructions:

  • Light: Plant your Variegated Sweet Flag in partial to full shade. It prefers a location with dappled sunlight and protection from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Soil: This plant is adaptable and will thrive in a range of soil types, but it prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil. If you’re planting it in a water garden or near a pond, it can even grow in shallow water.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. If grown in water, the crown should be slightly above the waterline.
  • Maintenance: Prune dead or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking its best. In the fall, consider cutting back the foliage to encourage fresh growth in the following season.
  • Fertilization: A light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can promote healthy growth.
  • Winter Care: Variegated Sweet Flag is generally hardy, but in very cold climates, you may want to mulch around the base in winter to protect the roots.

Special Features and Usage:

  • Foliage: The most outstanding feature is its variegated foliage with striking green and cream-colored stripes. The leaves add a unique texture and visual appeal to your garden.
  • Fragrance: The roots of this plant exude a sweet, pleasant fragrance, which has made it historically valuable in herbal and medicinal uses.
  • Wildlife Attraction: If you have a pond or water feature, this plant can provide shelter for aquatic life, including small fish and amphibians. It’s also known to attract beneficial insects.
  • Herbal Use: Traditionally, the root of Acorus Calamus has been used for its aromatic and medicinal properties. While not recommended for consumption without proper expertise, it adds a touch of historical intrigue to your garden.
